Sexy and Miggs

Local playwright Michael McKeever has enjoyed a stream of successes. His ‘Sexy and Miggs’ will début at the New Theatre this month. Set in South Beach, it revolves around two friends, Mary Ann Duffy and Philip Miggar, who have to deal with a decade of sex, love and life in a multicultural community. McKeever’s play asks whether a man and woman can look past their gender differences and remain friends.

Iguana

An obligatory port of call for visitor’s to the city’s northern reaches, the huge plates of Mexican cooking and intoxicating Brazilian beats make Iguana one of the most popular hang-outs along the trendy Fondamenta della Misericordia. A happy hour on the ‘cubinos’ (rum and colas) and mammoth cocktail list pack in the crowds, as do the regular Tuesday night Jazz, Blues and Bossanove nights.

Sculpture Biennale

Carrara is Tuscany’s ‘Marble City’. The 10th biennale celebrates the town’s long relationship with the characteristic grey local stone. The exhibition traces the last 100 years of sculpture in the region, with particular reference to some of the major artists, past and present, who have worked there. Familiar names include Henry Moore, Joan Miro, Ferdinand Botero, Igor Mitoraj and Marino Marini. Some 130 works, including marble and bronze sculptures, plaster models and sketches, are on show in various squares, parks and galleries around town.

Chick Corea

Chick Corea is undoubtedly one of the most important jazz pianists to have emerged over the last three decades. Picking up where the likes of the great Bill Evans left off, Corea has, in the course of his career, meddled with all manner of jazz, including fusion, classical and free. He has also worked with many of the greats of the jazz world, including Miles Davies. This three-day residency, with two sets per day, will be a rare treat for fans. As always, try to catch the late show if you can.

William Wegman

These high-fashion hounds are better dressed than most of Hollywood. In fact, they are stars themselves. The Fabric Workshop and Museum presents a special photography exhibition of William Wegman’s famous Weimaraners dressed in an array of haute couture. Organised by the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama, the show presents fabulous style with an imaginative canine twist. Clad in styles from the like of Versace, Gaultier, Gucci and Dolce Gabbana, these designer dogs are adorned in anything from string bikinis, gold sunglasses, beaded bags and elaborate hats.

Pho Lok

Well-known in the US for bringing fast food to Vietnamese cooking, Pho Luk has found a quiet corner of Shanghai Plaza from which to begin its assault on China. Familiar dishes such as barbecue beef noodles and spring rolls are given just enough of a Vietnamese twist to distinguish them from Chinese fare. The bamboo interior sounds rather twee but, somehow they manage to carry it off.
