Parent-Child Eco Day
For one day only, for just Y3,500, the staff of the Palace Hotel, one of Tokyo’s longest established and most exclusive places to stay, will give you a guided tour of the hotel’s raw garbage recycling systems. Watch as the mangled waste slurps down the chutes, gasp as the waste paper makes its way to be pulped or incinerated. And then, having worked up an appetite, retire to the Terrace Restaurant Swan, where a special lunch will be provided. Tour in Japanese, but commentary may not be necessary.
Ye Cha, Fei Xu + Si Zui
A night of rap-metal from two Beijing bands. Don’t confuse the second band with the experimental Japanese drum and base duo of the same name (aka Ruins) that was supposed to visit town back in August. If you do make the mistake, you’ll have to put up with a bunch of angry kids listening to music that sounds like a Chinese version of American band Korn. Recent gigs have been subject to very late changes so call to confirm.
Chick Corea
Chick Corea is undoubtedly one of the most important jazz pianists to have emerged over the last three decades. Picking up where the likes of the great Bill Evans left off, Corea has, in the course of his career, meddled with all manner of jazz, including fusion, classical and free. He has also worked with many of the greats of the jazz world, including Miles Davies. This three-day residency, with two sets per day, will be a rare treat for fans. As always, try to catch the late show if you can.
Amazing Journeys
For a true surround sound and vision experience, the Omnimax theatre offers a full-on thrill. 360-degree vision in this domed theatre and there’s a series of programmes you would lap up if you’re a fan of the Discovery or National Geographic channels. ‘Amazing Journeys’ examines the life cycle of animals and birds in their annual migrations. Shows come with commentaries in four languages Cantonese, English, Putonghua and Japanese.
