Germany at its most seductive
Perhaps the most picturesque stretch in all of Europe, the Romantische Strasse, or Romantic Road, provides a charming and fanciful trip. Though some of the locations are touristy and often booked solid, many locations are sleepy and serene, offering a unique taste of Germany and an unforgettable journey. You?ll find half-timbered houses on tiny cobbled lanes, art and architecture to treat the eyes, enough flowers and animal life to satisfy the greediest nature lover, and restaurants and hotels offering some of the loveliest fare and most beautiful rooms in all of Germany.
Depending on whether you’re traveling north or south, the Road begins in Wuerzburg in northern Bavaria and stretches to the border with Austria, ending in the city of Fuessen. Despite its flowery name, the Road is a result of the lull in German tourism after World War II. Needing a boost and a change of image, West German tourist officials linked the locations, supplied easy traveling and a lovely name, and the rest is history. They did a good job, now the Road is one of the most popular stretches in the world.
